Stay Lit: (9/29 – 10/01) Weekend Happenings in DC for the English Major
I know. It’s the fifth week of the semester and you’re sitting in your dorm room freaking out about all the work that’s on your plate. You’re counting down the days until Fall Break (only 11 left), and wondering if you can make it until then. I know just what you need, therefore I am giving you permission to introduce some fun into your anxiety-ridden life. Go to this Eileen Myles talk about her new book, Afterglow. It’s this Saturday at Politics & Prose, and as if you needed any more coaxing to hear one of America’s most unique and engaging queer poets and memoirist speak, I should also tell you that her new book is a memoir about her beloved dog, Rosie (look at this old photo of the two of them, I mean c’mon). If you are unfamiliar with Myles’ work, get to the bookstore early (which you’ll want to do anyway because seating is on a first come first serve basis), and check out Chelsea Girls, Myles’ memoir about her strict Catholic upbringing, her “unabashed ‘lesbianity,'” and her life as a daring poet in NYC in the 1970’s.

So you were out late Saturday night celebrating your trivia win. You wake up and it’s dinner time and you need to feed yourself, but you’re also thinking, “I could really go for some queer slam poetry.” Well, I have great news for you. This Sunday is the first Sunday of the month and that means Busboys and Poets is hosting their monthly, LGBTQIA-dedicated open-mic, *SPARKLE*. Grab some vegan quesadillas for you and your friends, sit back, and enjoy listening to one of the best open-mic nights that DC has to offer. Get your tickets ahead of time and arrive early to get a good seat.
