A Midsummer Night’s Dream Viewing Party
Join the GW English Department for a screening of the Globe Theatre’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream at 2 pm, Saturday, September 25, 2021.
This event takes place online and is live streamed from the Globe Theatre. The running time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes with no interval. Stay tuned afterwards for a talk back with Emily Lathrop. Lathrop has a PhD in English from The George Washington University and currently serves as the Audience Engagement and Fellowship Manager at Woolly Mammoth Theatre Company. Her current work focuses on the intersections of audience engagement, Shakespeare performance, arts administration, and the myth of universality.

Our distinguished guest is Dr. Emily Lathrop, one of our PhDs (!), who will lead a talkback after the event. Emily knows our strengths well and we thought it would be wonderful if we could bring the full range of our skills and talents to the conversation. To that end, I’ve prepared a “press packet” to give you a sense of what’s to come and to help you inspire your students to bring what they’re learning in your classrooms to our discussion. It includes two reviews, press photos, and transcripts to two podcasts that situate the performance in terms of Shakespeare & politics and Shakespeare & histories of racism and misogyny.
Shakespeare in performance raises questions about histories of race, gender, and sexuality; about racism and cultural appropriation; about disability and access; about global exchange and translation; and about health, public space, and the environment. My hope is that our talkback will include these bigger issues. I can’t wait to watch it with you and discuss it together as a department.
