Stay Lit: (10/13 – 10/15) Weekend Happenings in DC for the English Major
The Freer and Sackler Museums of Asian Art are finally reopening, and it’s likely to be an exciting celebration. There will be food, music, and of course interactive and informational presentations. One such activity is The Art of Illuminations where you can learn about the tradition of decorating the pages of Islamic books. Artists Lubna Zahid and Sughra Hussainy will teach you about the techniques, and the materials used, as well as why this centuries-old tradition is so enduring. This event starts at 5pm in the Smithsonian Haupt Garden on Saturday the 14th and will pick up again on Sunday at 11am.

Also at the museum reopening will be the chance to learn about The World of Japanese Books. You’ll learn about what goes into making these printed books, including the binding technique and the beautiful images and words inside. The presentation kicks off at 5pm on Sunday, in the Sackler, level B2, across from ImaginAsia Studio.

Finally, to get you more into the spirit of the season, the Black Cat is hosting, Hallo-Zine, a fundraiser for DC Zinefest. Spooky stories will be told by local writers. Also, there are open mic opportunities so get ready because there will be a prize at the end for the most terrifying take. It’s this Sunday, and doors are at 7:30pm.
